More on "Rock Band"

After reviewing the newly announced additions to the Rock Band tracklist, I think I only question the wisdom of one entry: "Do You Want to Know a Secret." As I wrote back in January, it's a likable song that "delivers a warm and modest pop pleasure." But that's not the description of a choice tune for Rock Band. "Secret" is just too earthbound. Beyond that, I like the picks.

And while we're on the subject, here's the game's second trailer. The clips continue to impress mightily.

I might disagree with you on this. While "Do You Want to Know a Secret" is by no means a very challenging song where guitar is concerned, I think you may have overlooked the exquisite vocal harmonies. The reason 'Rock Band' has always been a step above 'Guitar Hero' is because it incorporates all aspects of the song instead of just heavy guitar riffs. I think 'Secret' was chosen for those who like to rock the mic, but I can definitely understand why people are puzzled over that song.

Point taken, Jill. I definitely see where you're coming from. My initial thinking was there are enough great Beatles songs which feature both challenging harmonies and lively guitar parts that tamer entries like "Secret" wouldn't have to be included. But I could be wrong. I don't know how many tracks will ultimately be made available to play. And the game does need variety. "Secret" has the benefit in this regard of being an early Beatles song that George helmed vocally. So, evidently, I'm less certain about this than I first let on (and thanks for the comment once again).
